Cabinet with backup tapes

After announcing our expansion into an underground hosting facility (and answering plenty of questions about whether that was real 😄) we can confirm we are also working on a very real upgrade to our backup strategy.

From April we are moving part of our off-site backups to Scaleway Glacier, an affordable and robust long-term storage service, housed in a literal bunker deep underground in France.

These backups are primarily long-term snapshots of critical data where we want to go back further than, say, three months.

Why this move?

  • Physical separation: extra protection against disasters or incidents on Dutch soil
  • Compliance friendly: Scaleway is fully French and fits data sovereignty requirements
  • Geographic diversity: a key step towards resilient infrastructure
  • Cost effective: low storage costs for backups you hopefully never have to restore
  • Cool factor: come on, it lives in a bunker…

We will of course continue operating our regular off-site backups in the Netherlands, but this addition provides extra peace of mind and fits how we think about continuity and sustainability.

More details will follow soon in our technical documentation, including retention policy and encryption approach.
